Large-tree trimming in Toledo, Ohio

Trimming a big tree is a different job from trimming a small one: the cuts are made 40 to 80 feet up, the limbs that come off weigh hundreds of pounds, and what is underneath decides the method. This page covers crown reduction on silver maples and oaks over a house, deadwood and risk pruning, clearance from roofs and service drops, and the timing rules that matter here — including the April 15 to July 15 oak-wilt window in Monroe County. It is performed by a partner crew that works both sides of the state line and brings its own crane when the crown is over the roof.

What is the goal of trimming a large tree?

One of four things: reduce the load on a weak union, remove dead or hazardous wood, create clearance from a roof or line, or clean up storm damage — and the estimate should name which. "Trim it back" is not a scope. A crown reduction shortens the leaders over the house so that a silver maple with a seam of included bark at the union carries less sail in a derecho. Deadwooding takes out the limbs that will come down on their own, which on a mature oak can be a hundred pounds apiece. Clearance pruning gets branches off the shingles and away from the service drop. Storm cleanup removes hangers and broken stubs and makes proper cuts where the wind made ragged ones. Each is priced and done differently, and each has a wrong version: topping a tree — cutting leaders back to stubs — is not a reduction, and removing too much live crown at once stresses the tree and invites decay. The planning guide has a section on whether to ask about trimming or removal; on a dead ash, the answer is removal.

Can a dead ash be pruned instead of removed?

No — and a half-dead one is a removal decision, not a pruning one. The emerald ash borer reached Northwest Ohio in 2003 and kills an infested ash within three to six years. Once the top has died back, the wood is brittle from the tips inward, a climber has nothing reliable to tie into, and the limbs that would be "pruned" are the ones that snap. Removing dead limbs from an ash that still has a live crown buys time, but only if the borer is being treated; otherwise the tree is on the same three-to-six-year clock. The honest scope for a dead ash is removal from the ground, by bucket where it reaches and by crane where it does not — see crane tree removal and the dead-ash guide.

How is a big tree trimmed when the crown is over the house?

From a bucket where a truck can set on firm ground within reach, by climbing where the tree is sound, and with a crane holding the limbs where they cannot be dropped or lowered. A bucket truck works to roughly 55 to 75 feet and needs about 10 to 12 feet of firm access; that covers most front-yard trees and anything near the driveway. A sound oak or maple in the backyard is climbed, and the limbs over the roof are rigged and lowered on lines. When the leaders being reduced are big enough that lowering them over the roof is the risk, the crew brings the crane: a sling on the limb, the crane takes the weight, the cut is made, the limb floats to the landing zone. Because the crew on this site owns its cranes, a reduction that needs one is scheduled as a normal job rather than around a rental. The size guide covers where each method stops being enough.

When should a large tree be trimmed in Toledo and Monroe County?

Dead wood any time; live wood mostly in the dormant season; oaks in Southeast Michigan never between April 15 and July 15. Deadwooding and hazard pruning do not depend on the season. Structural reductions are easiest to plan with the leaves off, when the union and the lean are visible, and before the April-to-August severe-wind season. The one hard rule is oak wilt: between April 15 and July 15, do not prune, cut or wound a live oak in Bedford Township, Temperance, Lambertville or anywhere in Monroe County, because the beetles that spread oak wilt are active and a red oak can die within weeks of infection. Storm-damaged oaks in that window get their wounds painted. Oak pruning on the Michigan side is a late-winter or late-summer job. The problem-trees guide covers oak wilt in detail.

Who trims the trees near the wires?

Utility tree work protects its lines; confirm the scope with the supplier for your address. Toledo Edison, a FirstEnergy company, prunes under its easement and right-of-way rights on the Ohio side, and states that storm debris and large wood left at the base of a pruned tree are the property owner’s responsibility. DTE Electric does the same in Monroe County. Neither trims for your view, your roof or your gutters, and neither touches the service drop from the pole to the house — that is your line, and both utilities will disconnect it on request so a private crew can work near it. A tree between the sidewalk and the curb is a public tree under Toledo Municipal Code Chapter 917; residents do not prune it, but pruning permits are free and the city handles its own trees through Engage Toledo at 419-936-2020. The Ohio vs Michigan guide lays out who trims what on each side.

What to send for a trimming estimate

The address, a wide photo that shows the whole crown and the house, and one sentence on the goal. "The two big leaders lean over the garage and I want the weight reduced before summer" gets a different crew and a different truck than "the branches are on the roof." Add the trunk diameter if you can (circumference ÷ 3.14), whether the tree is an oak (timing) or an ash (removal conversation), the narrowest gate width, and whether it stands in the yard or in the tree lawn. Request an estimate. If the tree is dead, leaning or already on the house, start with tree removal or storm service instead.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell if my tree is healthy?

This website does not diagnose tree health. Describe what you are seeing — dead top, mushrooms at the base, a crack at a union, a new lean — and the crew assesses the actual tree on site.

Will you top my tree?

No. Topping — cutting leaders back to stubs — produces weakly attached regrowth and decay and is not a reduction. A crown reduction shortens leaders back to lateral branches that can take over.

Can you trim my oak in June?

Dead wood, yes. Live wood on the Michigan side, no: the oak-wilt window runs April 15 to July 15 in Southeast Michigan. On the Ohio side the same caution is sensible. Late winter is the best time for oak work.

Will the utility trim my tree for free?

Utility work protects electric service, not roofs, views or gutters. Ask your supplier about the particular conductor: DTE distinguishes pole-to-pole trimming from service-drop clearance, while Consumers Energy includes limbs rubbing on service conductors in its tree-maintenance scope. Never work near energized wires yourself.

Do you trim trees in Michigan?

Yes — the partner crew is licensed in both Ohio and Michigan and trims in Bedford Township, Temperance, Lambertville, Erie and Monroe with the same crews and equipment.
